Sara Ludy, Otha
Otha is a space portrait of a prefab house in Second Life. The house is one of 11 prefab house models that exist on the island ‘Botha Architects’. Prefab houses are quite popular in Second Life, allowing a user to quickly move into a new virtual domestic lifestyle. The houses tend to be bare with little to no furniture leaving the architecture to become the seduction of investigation.
I began documenting domestic spaces in Second Life last year. I started a tumblr project called Projection Monitor which contains photographs and field recordings. Not long after investigating these virtual domestic spaces I became interested in how they were resonating a sense of familiarity, but were places I had never been. I started taking screen shots of these ‘familiar’ spaces and then later re-photographing them. Otha is composed of these re-photographed screen shots, acting as a memory based diaporama about the investigated space.
